May 2026 marks the centenary of the only general strike ever held in Britain.
The strike was called in support of coalminers who were fighting against reduced pay and increased working hours. In 1926 about 1 in 10 of all working age men were employed in the coal industry.
The General Strike was an event of great national significance but also had huge impact locally because of the proximity of the north Somerset coalfield.
