After many years of research on our document collection of Bathford Papermill, volunteer Ben Marvell presents a fascinating tale of industry operating during wartime. The Bathford Papermill project is concerned with assessing the museum’s extensive archive of documents relating to the papermill with a particular focus on the First World War. Although largely made up of documents received by the papermill, the collection also contains limited examples of correspondence sent by the papermill to other organisations and businesses. The talk will focus on the social and economic implications of the conflict and its impact on a small rural business – with a particular focus on correspondence with the Great Western Railway and the difficulties in obtaining raw materials/maintaining the workforce during the war years.
